License Plates in the REAL News!

(Taken from “The Daily Skimm” Online”)

“Don’t mess with Texas. That’s what the Supreme Court said yesterday when they ruled that a state can prevent you from putting certain things on your license plate . A group sued Texas for rejecting a license plate design featuring a Confederate flag, arguing that the flag shows Southern pride. And that it should be allowed because hellooo free speech. Texas said it shouldn’t be allowed because hellooo it’s offensive. The Supremes sided with Texas, saying state license plates are “government speech” which is different from “private speech.” So the license plate doesn’t get the First Amendment treatment. The ruling could set a precedent for states to say ‘no thanks’ to messages they don’t like.”
